I always would Guard the hits, and be disciplined enough to only attack him once or twice (he breaks out of full combos) and just try to whittle him away. The hardest fights I remember as a kid were Ceberus and the Cave of Wonders. In my replay I wasn't sure what I was going to do about his final phase since I wouldn't be able to outlast him. I ditched the staff in this playthrough, but I didn't realize how late you learn MP Rage in the Final Mix version, which is a critically important ability. In the end I decided to just power through and attack him without concern for myself to try and take him out before he could take me out. Luckily I came out on top. --- Okay, I rolled a 14.
