My experience with politicians is they never give more of a fuck about anything than they do their own re-election campaign. Democrats aren't special in this regard. It's not exactly novel to point out that political parties tend to have campaign platforms and policies whose benefits will be felt most by their likely voters.

I don't think racism is magically a solved issue for left wing parties (it sure isn't here in Canada, which is part of why I feel the way I do, since I've heard the same kind of rhetoric and it hasn't been true at all). If immigrants voted Republican all the time, I somehow doubt there wouldn't be a fair number of Democrat politicians who decided they didn't want those (non-white) criminals coming into their country. And a fair number Republicans would suddenly not care about border security or the importance of following the legal process, because it would benefit them to shift principles.

I'm not saying there aren't Democrats who legitimately care for reasons of empathy and would regardless of the circumstances. Hell, there are plenty of Republicans who care about this, even some who are elected to government. But no matter the cause or issue, there are always going to be a fair number of people who value their overall agenda enough to turn a blind eye to just about anything that helps advance it.
