I think you need a reservation but it should be easy to get one even day of. Eat out a lot. Walk around Gion. Hit up Nijo-jo. Can't speak to Osaka as I haven't been yet. Have fun. Japan is the greatest place in the world. edit: Can't stress the eating out thing enough btw.
