None of the Trails games are unrelated! In fact characters from previous games show up and continue their stories in later games all the time.

Cold Steel was sort of made as a 'second entry point' however so you don't need to have played Sky or the Crossbell games to understand the plot in CS1 and 2 (though as said, 2 basically spoils FC and SC's entire plot). 3 and 4, however, go back to tons of character/plot crossovers.

Also despite CS1/2 standing alone plotwise there are still a ton of Sky references.
