I programmed the poker minigame AI in a western game years ago (Gun). No, it has a lot to do with understanding cards and strategies. I was terrible at reading people and would blush instantly when people tried to read me. Still won poker tournaments at my company cause I had just put together a poker AI and knew the strategy better than my opponents did.
