WWE cares a lot more than the performers do I'm sure. Obvious exceptions to guys who came up with their own gimmick or have kept it across organizations like MVP.

Branding

I think it's a holdover from the kayfabe days. I mean, I don't know these people personally and I'd hate to assume as such. I think it matters less nowadays. I know Bryan Alvarez told a story about calling Adam Cole by his real name, and he didn't realize he had done it - in fact, he didn't realize the name he had used WAS his real name. He thought he had just said the wrong name. Alvarez went to apologize later and said, "Is your real name X?" Adam Cole laughed and said, "Yeah, I thought we were on a first name basis now!"
