All right, I'm finished with the last Hyouka book, although apparently there's a separate short story and some drama CDs that they've also translated, so I'll read those, too. The last story in the sixth book was, fittingly enough since we discussed this quite a bit recently, a very Yukiko-esque character arc for Chitanda, although one that's from a different perspective that veers in a different direction. Chitanda's circumstances as a wealthy and noble heiress to a longstanding household estate aren't really something any of us can relate to on a personal level (or at least I assume so). That's part of what makes her plight interesting though. We see it from Hotaro's perspective, which is a point of view most of us understand since he's just your average dude (well not entirely but you know what I mean).

Obviously I can't say too much since it'd be spoilers and I'm pretty sure no one here has read it so there'd be no point in elaborating anyway, but I was impressed with the level of sympathy and kindness Hotaro showed toward Chitanda's situation, all things considered. The books never call it love and almost seem to go out of their way to avoid presenting them in any sort of romantic situation (the anime is a little more overt in that regard but thankfully never too much so), but I've said it before about Hotaro and Chitanda: Their relationship is clearly special without having to give it some "official" designation.

The way the story ends is also left rather vague, so I guess it's left up to the reader's interpretation as to what ends up happening. I think it leans toward one outcome over the other, but both possibilities are viable, so that's neat. I certainly hope that's not where the series ends because there's still room for more to be told if the author wants to continue it. Apparently, this separate short story was written only six months ago, so I guess that means there's the chance of still more to come.
