I have also read that it really wasn't until the Suez in 1956 when it became clear that the UK was no longer a world power. They tried to make something happen, the US didn't want a part of it and didn't participate, and they weren't able to pull it off and had to pull back and give up. It became clear that the UK was no longer a major player.


If I recall correctly the US decided to threaten their currency somehow (perhaps selling off the pounds they had or something like that) and they couldn't have that so they backed off.

They could have still been a # 2 in the global stage, but instead they crumbled, it puzzles me so much
