Just finished off cyberdimension neptunia 4GO. Mixed feelings as always. On one hand, all nep games are horrible games full of incredible laziness and poorly balanced mechanics but on the other hand I had fun and played it the end. I can't fully remember nep U but I think that had a better combat system. This one was really lackluster. The lack of hitstun and monsters taking a second to die made all your attacks just feel so weak even if they weren't.

Enemy variety is pitiful and everything is reskinned and reused constantly. Theres only a handful of equipment for each character and like usual feels like the person who put it there had no idea how strong various things were so you get super powerful joke weapons for some characters early on and all of sudden those characters do triple the damage of everyone else. You can upgrade weapons in this one but the materials seem so randomly distributed that again some characters easily end up statistically way stronger early on.

The AI is bad and cannot be trusted to heal you so you either have to be OP, play perfectly, or play one of the 3 characters that can heal. None of this matters though because Nep herself is OP and can solo everything and can heal and has magic to break bosses and has cheap OP dps skills for when they are broken and has wide range counter for getting EXE fast and has amazing stats and a strong basic attack. Blanc is decent too since she has a ranged basic attack but eventually basic attacks become meaningless and she is less tanky and does less damage than nep.

The gems (accessories) are also hilariously poorly balanced. Theres an elemental damage system but all bosses have no elemental weaknesses so its completely pointless rendering about 50% of the gems pointless as well. Raging waters lets you do 300% damage pretty much full time against bosses and that only takes 1 of your 3 slots.

Map design is a step up from normal nep games but is still awful with obnoxious and poor geometry blocking you a lot when it shouldn't. At least the maps and enemies in this game all have consistent themes so you aren't randomly fighting tetris and a floating screen on the moon or something. Their size is decent too. Oddly there a tons of return points making the item that lets you do that completely pointless. Everything in these games is just so incredibly poorly thought out.

So saying all that, the game should by all rights be terrible and unenjoyable. It's not though. The story was about as dumb as normal nep stories but they once again upped their yuri levels so that was a treat. The cast was smaller than normal so you avoid the thing in the main nep games when you reach a new chapter and all of sudden have 50 events to listen through first before you can continue. Now it's more like 10 events which is still a bit much with half of them being pretty pointless (not funny, not yuri, not ecchi). Like, I learned about a bunch tea playing this game. Why did I need to learn any of that? I don't drink tea.

The funny parts were pretty funny. We went over all the characters running gags but didn't overplay them too much so they didn't get too stale. I beat every quest and got every achievement. Still haven't finished a mainline nep game since the very first one.
