Im pretty sure that you can always advance. Ive never heard about people doing stuff that locks them out I'll take your word for it. I've always wanted to play this but have just never gotten around to dicking with SCUMM. Then you can try it out now :) It still uses SCUMM, but its integrated in a way that makes you not notice it. The game is just as responsive as if without it. The game uses F1 to bring up the Menu, not Esc.
