a mental illness must negatively impact your life.

I'm not sure that is accurate. Where are you getting that info from?

dsm 5

Want to provide where in the entire DSM 5 you are referencing that?

I'm on mobile right now so I can't sift through it right now but here's a mayo clinic link instead

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mental-illness/symptoms-causes/syc-20374968

Many people have mental health concerns from time to time. But a mental health concern becomes a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function.

Mental illness can be mental illness without significant stress or inhibit someone's ability to function. See posts #16 and #18

My concern is the ulterior motive I often see of using a mental illness classification to stigmatize others. Calling someone "mentally ill" is loaded beyond belief in this day and age.
