97. I Am Setsuna
Original Release: 2016
Developer: Square Enix/Tokyo RPG Factory
Platform: PS4

Here's the first home console release on the list! I don't know how to feel about I Am Setsuna. It's just mediocrity at every level. It's also incredibly cheap-- everything about it is so budget and the $40 pricetag is abysmal when this game's probably worth $15 at most. They try to sell it with style: oh it takes place in a snow-covered land, oh the music is all piano so you feel more emotion. Well, guess what, I think it's that way because they were lazy and they didn't want to spend extra money to vary the design. Other than that, this game is so linear and drops a bunch of gameplay systems on you, many of which are overly complicated and probably not necessary because the game was a cakewalk from what I've played of it (13 or so hours of a 20-25 hour game).

I bet not giving it an English dub was also a budgetary decision. Not that I mind the Japanese voices, but come on Squenix. You know you're just trying to leech money off people so you can fund Final Fantasy XV (this was a mid-2016 release). In fact you marketed this game as a love letter to Chrono Trigger, but it never even comes close to that. I'm sick of games trying to come off as the next Chrono Trigger or developers wanting to compare their games to Chrono Trigger. There's other 2D RPGs out there, you know? Why not make a Lufia 2 love letter? Or a Breath of Fire 2 love letter?

At least the game's dull, drab snow setting has dungeons that are better than Bravely Default's dungeons.
