41. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Snake555555555)

Some people may think I'm not a big fan of this game because I criticize it relative to the other three major games in the series, but that's just because I think they're all better (yes, even MGS4, which nobody nominated, sadly). On its own, Metal Gear Solid 2 is a pretty great game. The Tanker is a masterpiece of level design. It introduces you very effectively to all the new gameplay elements and prepares you perfectly for the rest of the game beyond it. It's short enough that you can get through it easily in a single sitting, too. Also, Otacon attempting to mimic Mei Ling's proverbs is one of the greatest comedic things in the entire series. I save compulsively during the Tanker just so I can hear them all. Then the game gives you a taste of just how insane it's going to get with the whole "I LIVE ON THROUGH THIS ARM!" twist with Liquid Ocelot.

Once you switch over to controlling Raiden (spoilers), the gameplay and level design still remain sharp. I love the Big Shell. I think it's really well laid out and manages to feel diverse despite technically being a singular location. The new gameplay changes and additions from the original Metal Gear Solid are fun, and it just feels really smooth overall. There are a lot of excellent boss fights here, too, like the Harrier, Vamp, Solidus, and the RAY overload. The Fatman fight sucks though. Speaking of Fatman and sucking, Dead Cell might be one of the weakest parts of the game. They're all pretty bad except for Solidus. Thankfully, Liquid Ocelot is there to carry the villainous dead weight. Metal Gear Solid 2 has a few missteps in its plot, but most of them can be forgiven and overlooked because they at least tried to do something crazy and forward thinking, particularly with its discussion on memes. They even justified retreading large portions of Metal Gear Solid's plot under the guise of the S3 Plan! Kojima was never crazier than he was here, and I love it. On the other hand, Dead Cell was just an unfortunate mistake.

My favorite part of Metal Gear Solid 2 is actually the Emma Emmerich plotline. I thought she was a really good character, and the outcome of that arc, culminating in the surprisingly heartwarming bro-handshake/hug between Snake and Otacon, is really powerful emotionally. Granted, in typical MGS2 fashion, it's not exactly a perfect scenario because Otacon's "confession" is awkward as heck, but otherwise, it's great. The plot takes insanity up to eleven (or maybe 61 would be a more accurate number) from that point on, and that might be the most memorable part of the game for some people. For me, it's E.E. She might be the best female character in the series!
