Did you just assume I'm American? I'm Dutch, I'm used to Dutch cheese, so the cheese I assume is American (Cheddar, the type McDonalds uses I think) to me is like plastic.

American is not Cheddar, though McDonalds does use American.
Kraft sliced American does taste like plastic in a way, but you can also get good quality American from a deli. American cheese can be great.
Also, the USA has plenty of options to get just about every variety of cheese imaginable.
