Plenty of people get by just fine without it, not so much with something like water though, an actual need.

Mostly with the psychological impacts isolation causes. Love isn't necessarily a need but being around others/some form of companionship is important to being psychologically healthy to a majority of people.

No source but the idea behind it is pretty easy to find in a lot of behavioral psych text books
