Grabbing someone's butt is both sexual and physical assault under the law. If the guy had ONLY physically assaulted her, a lot of people would say she was justified in retaliating. But because it was also sexual assault, suddenly it's not okay and she overreacted. But if a guy decks someone for grabbing his girlfriend's butt, how many people would say he deserved it? Guys grope because they expect to get away with it consequence-free. If they were afraid of negative consequences, it would stop.

Technically, a grandmother pinching your cheeks is assault. Should you beat the shit out of your grandma? A woman once grabbed my ass probably because she expected to get away with it. Should I have beat her up?

Does context matter when it comes to "assault" and how you react to it?

No, that doesn't qualify as assault under the law. Yes, context matters, and the context here was a male stranger grabbing her butt. If a random gay dude pinched your butt, how would you react? A lot of guys would probably punch him.
