It's complicated... but in a nutshell

In our body there are free radicals which we naturally produce but you can also get them from smoking, stress, pollution, etc. They cause damage to us which can make us sick, make us prone to diseases, age quicker, etc. Antioxidents get rid of these free radicals, kind of like how the immune system gets rid of infections.

A certain level of free radicals is actually healthy to have though.

Food companies oversimplify everything and just imply that anti-oxidants are some miraculous anti-aging substance though.
