74. Persona 4: Dancing All Night (Janus5k)

This is another instance where a YouTube video is more appropriate than a GIF because that thing is seriously amazing. It fits so perfectly. You don't even need to have played the game to enjoy that. Anyway, Persona 4: Dancing All Night was my very first Platinum, so it will always hold a special place in my heart for that alone! Seriously though, I do like this game. Probably the biggest bummer is the fact that you can't freely choose your character and partner for any given song, but they gave each character a unique dancing style, so I kinda get it. I think they should've given you more leeway on your dance partner though, but I honestly eventually got over it because I had a lot of fun with it. I don't have a lot of experience with rhythm games, so while I'm sure there are ones out there with better scoring systems and control schemes, I can't judge it based on those qualities. I wanted to play this one to get one more game with the Persona 4 cast (one of my absolute favorites in anything) and because I love the series' music.

The most pleasant surprise of this game is Kanami Mashita, the Risette replacement from Persona 4 who had been occasionally spoken of but never seen until now. She's just so much fun. I love all of her songs because they're so high energy and catchy, especially her version of Your Affection. Kanami is also an intriguing character in the story mode, the entirety of which is basically a scathing commentary on how fake and unhealthy the pop idol industry is. The premise of the story (defeating Shadows with the power of dance!) is absurd, but there's a serious message hidden in there, too. Kanami develops a really endearing friendship with Nanako, too. The other members of Kanamin Kitchen are kinda whatever, but Kanami herself is really good.

As far as the gameplay itself goes, I suppose one of the appeals of rhythm games is seeing yourself gradually getting better and better at the songs until you eventually nail the perfect run, which Dancing All Night refers to as "King Crazy" for some reason. I eventually got to the point where I could at least complete every song on Hard, although I've only gotten a perfect run on a few. I could barely handle the All Night difficulty, but again, I don't play these games often. Probably my favorite songs in the game are the aforementioned Kanami version of Your Affection, Yukiko's version of Snowflakes, Kanji's version of Best Friends, Rise's version of Now I Know, and Marie's version of the P4AU theme, Break Out Of... (yes the song title trails off at the end like that). I generally enjoy them all though. I'm looking forward to the Persona 3 and Persona 5 versions, too, so hopefully they get localized!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Persona song?
