76. Mass Effect: Andromeda (kateee)
mVpJ13i

Andromeda never really had a chance from the beginning. Not only did it have to inherit the backlash from Mass Effect 3 (despite the 5-year gap; BioWare fans are kind of insane), but it had a multitude of issues pre-release with all the laughable face renders and glitches, among other things. It's hard to believe that one of the most popular new series from the last generation is now in cold storage for the foreseeable future, but that's where we are. Anyway, I actually had fun with Andromeda. It's basically a better Mass Effect 1, especially in the gameplay department. The battle system is as good as ever, especially once you're able to upgrade to the better skills. The game allows you to save several loadouts, and you can switch between them on the fly if you want. You can also switch between classes instead of being locked into one from the start, so it's very flexible. I didn't do that much though. I found a configuration I liked and stuck with it for the most part, making edits here and there as needed. I also enjoyed exploring the new worlds and getting them all to max viability, especially the Remnant Vaults. Those were really fun.

While most of the squadmates in Andromeda wouldn't come close to breaking my top ten or be my favorite representatives for their races, it was still a pretty solid group. The best news is that there's plenty of banter throughout the game regardless of who your squadmates are at any given time. They interact with each other a lot. The breakout character here is Jaal, from a new race called the Angara. He reminds me of Javik in a lot of ways, albeit with the harshness dialed back a bit. His character arc was a major highlight of the game for me. Andromeda also brought back Loyalty Missions, which was really cool. You can tell they definitely amped up the production values for these things, too, and they're some of the best things in the game.

They changed the dialogue wheel so that it's more neutral rather than just straight up Paragon/Renegade for most choices, but I actually kind of missed the old system because you could get vastly different outcomes based on those two choices. In Andromeda, sometimes the responses all look kind of the same despite having more of them, although I don't know if they affect things in different ways or not since I've only played the game once. I suppose it's nice to be able to choose whatever you want in any given situation without worrying it'll prevent you from being able to select certain things later, but I was honestly fine with those restrictions and limitations.

I suppose there's more that I could say, but I don't want these writeups to go on too long. Suffice it to say that I liked Andromeda despite its flaws, and I'm very sad that we're not going to get any more than what we got. Seriously, BioWare fans are just the worst.

Bonus Question: What's your favorite new series from last gen?
