I could swear they said he fell from space I think the premise behind all that was that this company was collecting some supplement from the ocean, that being produced from, or directly involved in making clover into the monster it was. The effects the cloverlings have on humans seems to suggest it's produced by them. There is a meteor impact of some sort in the beginning of the found tape, apparently it either disturbs clover, or is in fact the being. It could go either way. This is all wrong I've only experienced the ad campaign from an aggregate source someone posted on the movie board back then but that seemed to be the jist of it. There's some energy supplement that they are getting from the ocean. Monster inexplicably wakes up starts attacking.
