There's a lot of randomness to Donkey Kong, but if you're playing on MAME you could use a romhack that tilts things in your favor. For example iirc smashing a barrel is worth either 300, 500, or 800 points and how much you get is completely random, but with a modified ROM you could make 800 come up more often. That is a possibility and I wouldn't be surprised if true. All we know now, though, is he was using mame, and my points are why those records were thrown out.
