The games were often experimental and finding their footing back then. But people don't seem to remember there was a lot of crap that was just everywhere. The ratio of actual bad games were a lot worse back then. There's a reason mediocre publishers like Acclaim survived for so long while they won't today. We played so much crap and stuck with it because we didn't know any better.
I'm not saying there aren't issues. AAA games are often pretty safe these days. There is too much reliance on patching and DLC. But the benefits outweigh the positives. There is so much great gaming content that is released every week. You just need to look past all of the big AAA games.
TC's the type of person who only plays AAA games though.
