I hate this one for how universally agreed upon it seems to be. The teacher is never going to ask you about why the author outright said something is blue, and the author is never just going to say something is a color for the sake of it. That's bad storytelling. They would say "the door was as blue as the endless ocean view that lay beyond it" if they're using descriptive imagery, or "the door was as blue as Jack's emotions after leaving her doorstep" if they're trying to combine imagery and story relevance.

The teacher is going to ask you about shit that actually has relevance to the story, like "why do you think the author made note of the golden sunset at the end of The Outsiders?" (I don't remember if that's what actually happened but let's roll with it) And the answer of course would be a reference to "stay gold, Ponyboy".

Depends on the author, and on the teacher.

Even some of the greats, and especially some of the classics, are rife with unnecessary details and filler (or even necessary details and filler that's still pointless to focus on). And some teachers will have their own special interpretations and completely miss other important points.
