The Las Vegas shooting was shocking only by the sheer numbers, but a mass shooting in the USA is like hearing about a fire in a furnace. Aside from those, the most shocking and surprising story in 2017 for me was the election of Andrew Scheer as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. He wasn't even in the top 5 most likely contenders and I had never heard of him until he was elected.
