There have been protests planned all across the country today (December 31st) calling for elections. Elections were supposed to happen a year ago, and President Joseph Kabila's second term was supposed to end, but the government canceled the elections (claiming they weren't ready basically) and now Joseph Kabila has just continued on as President.

Kabila is basically a kleptocrat who steals all the country's money to pay off his cronies. He's only barely holding onto power and throwing everything he can at making sure that he remains in office.

Last year, at least 40 people were killed by the country's military when protests broke out. These protests are possibly going to be much larger.

In response to the protests, the government of the DRC completely shut down the internet and the SMS system across the country last night (apparently they have the ability to do this). Tanks and soldiers have been reported to be taking up positions in strategic locations where the protesters will likely be congregating.

Jason Stearns is an expert on the country who has been working on humanitarian stuff there for years, he has been tweeting about the situation
