I mean I like Snake, and he's one of my favorite characters ever (not even just from video games) but badass really isn't the first term that comes to mind when I think of him.

He got totally upstaged in S1 and then later in all the Big Boss games*, he totally wussed out when he thought he had to kill himself to keep Foxdie from going indiscriminate, and he got his butt kicked twice in MGS2, and never even grew to overcome those obstacles later.

I mean really, what I liked about him as a character was his weakness. Sure, he pulls off amazing feats and overcomes crazy odds but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about internal struggles, a cycle of development and regression, and his haunting self-awareness of it all.

*though in fairness, this was because they turned Big Boss into a superhero without a cape, which was really dumb
