Whether I say something is anime or a cartoon depends on how it's laid out. If you can more or less watch episodes in any order and not be missing anything, it's a cartoon. If you have to watch them in the established sequence to be able to keep track of what's going on, it's anime.


There are animes that aren't in chronological order. And there are American cartoons that are in chronological order


for me it was always about the style like if japan put out a cartoon that looked like family guy, I wouldn't call it anime. where as i've called avatar the last airbender an anime because to me it fits the overall style without being from japan. (least I heard it wasn't made in japan or even asia)
