We always have huge fires out here in the fall. These ones aren't even that bad. The winds are hitting my bedroom wall right now. I'm in a pass and the gusts are 70+ right now. It howls around the corner and sounds like a wave crashing.
But leave it to the news to over blow everything. Because people not from around here probably see it on tv and think "Omg how horrible." But no. This isn't anything new or unique. It's like this every year. And again. This isn't even that bad.

And bar for a few exceptions in all these fires and mudslides in the winter. These homes are these multi million dollar palaces of excess (mansion or track home) that are all built in areas where no homes should be. For exactly this reason. But oh nos. God forbid the natural terrain and surrounding hillsides with zero fire access stand in the way of these billionaire home developers building their next monstrosity of a plan.
And all these people say the same damn thing when being interviewed as they look at the ash pile that was their home. "We know the risks but it's just so beautiful we're going to rebuild." Every single time. You know. I have no sympathy then.

Thank you, just thank you for this post.
