2 > 4 > 3 > Rev > Bro > 1 > Lib > Freedom, if the ones I've played.

2 is the best in terms of story, directing, characters and game world. Plus it had the biggest improvement in gameplay from its previous entry.

In 4, I really missed the features they took out from 3, like your notoriety (on foot) and I was underwhelmed in general by the upgrade from 3. They reused lots of animations and added only a few gameplay features. Still, pirating was cool and story was solid.

3 got a lot of hate because of glitches, but almost all of these were patched before I ever played it. Huge upgrade in gameplay from Rev--almost as huge as 2 from 1--and by far my best setting. It did have its share of problems and if you're going for 100%, it's going to take forever, but overall a very underrated game.

Rev has so much going for it in so many ways but doesn't quite edge out 3 overall. The bombs were fun, even if you pretty much only use them to goof around. Hookblade was also fun. Great setting, great story, the first real closure in the whole series and an ending that felt like the writers came into work drunk (in the best possible way). Plus all the most annoying stuff is 99% avoidable. You only have to do one defense mission if you pay any attention at all to your notoriety and I'm pretty sure the Desmond crap is completely avoidable. Not much a fan of the one large overworld though.

Bro was kinda mediocre, tbh. It didn't add a lot to 2 and again I'm really not much a fan of the one large overworld. The Followers of Romulus were dumb way to add the crypts and the story feels superfluous and lazy overall. But I did love parts of Rome--like the Aqueducts and the Colosseum--and turning the whole city into the new Villa was a great idea. The gimmick levels were good for gimmick levels, too.

1 had great ideas but overall lacking execution. I loved that it let you actually plan your high profile assassinatins yourself but didn't like that it didn't end up mattering because you could mostly just run in and stab the guy, or you would always get noticed before you could do it, or any number of reasons. Still, giving you the chance and rarely taking control from the player explicity--even in pseudocutscenes--were great features that I was sure would be staples of the series. Side missions were super repetetive but thankfully optional.

Liberation had severely lacking story and characters, but the setting was not bad. What I loved about it (and I mean LOVED about it) was the personas system. But it was more of a feature that I could see potential for in future games (which sadly was omitted from 4) in a game that was otherwise underwhelming.

And finally Freedom Cry. I mean, let's be honest. It's a DLC.
