The walls rise before you, vast and wrong.

If architecture could hate, these walls hate. They are a frozen snarl, stone (at least you think it's stone) forced into a cage. They do not stand quite at right angles to the ground. No, those angles are wrong; they belong to an unholy geometry. They are waiting for you.

Above the walls arches a dome, cloudy and turbulent as if storm clouds roiled over its surface. Pallid, vicious lights flicker and stab across it from time to timealmost like lightning, if lightning were regular as a heartbeat. A very powerful force field perhaps. Or some unfathomable weather system, brooding over the walls and all that lies within.

Outside the walls, there is nothing. Just bleak, desolate, grayish rocks as far as you can see in all directions. And insideyou can catch only fragmentary glimpses. The silhouette of what might be a turret. The gleam of a needle-pointed spire. Red lights, fixed and unmoving.

You take a deep breath and walk toward the gates.

The gravel crunches beneath your feet as you approach the gates. The straps of your pack dig into your shouldersdid you really need to bring quite so much with you? And are those butterflies in your stomach?
