He got the bulk of the news coverage, but he also was always in the news doing outrageous things, and he was good for ratings. There are interviews with the chief execs of CNN and MSNBC where they admitted knowing that their coverage of Trump was effectively free advertising, and they did it anyway because covering the Trump campaign was so much more profitable than covering anything else.
