It was about the economy! No, technology had progressed to the point where they didn't need the labor of slaves (slaves produced more slaves so why do I need to pay more when I can have for free?).

It was about state rights! States rights to own slaves... the south was afraid the new states were going to be admitted as a free state. It would set a precedent for more states admitted into the union, and eventually slavery would be outlawed in the slave states as well.

You can blame it on colonization, but when you're the second to last country (I think Brazil was last) what does that say? It was a way of life built on racism and an exploitation of labor.

To say any other reason is wrong.
