There is no sound for him to hear because it hasn't gotten there yet. Same with the smell and if his smell detection range is really only 1 km than it'd be relatively easy to snipe him since shots have been made from over 1.5 miles away. Yeah, that part in the manga always bothered me too. I think he only managed to avoid getting sniped since he knew where the snipers were and he could see the bullets travelling to him.
