They don't seem to know anything about the-element-of-surprise & they've let atleast 10 perfectly set up assassination opportunitys slip right under there noises! Nothing really makes sense in this series, if the whole planet is trying to kill this guy, they'd succeed. They wouldn't need a bunch of (literal) reject minors to do it. Not to mention, if the world is ending in less then a year unless they kill this guy, why are they spending so much time & energy on things that don't in any way contribute to killing the guy!? You'll see why traps or ambushes have no effect on the teacher the more you read the series.
