It centers completely around mahjong, but you don't need to be too adept with it to enjoy the show. Just read up on the basic rules on Wikipedia. That's all I did before watching and it ended up being in my top 10 Akagi himself is like a cooler version of Kaiji. seen the live action show and the ending pissed me off but i'll check out the anime Robin_Dude posted...
