No, where I grew up in Omaha everyone either had a "sness" or a "Sega" (Genesis, but everyone just called it a Sega).
Where I spent every summer in Denver the kids called them "Nintendo" and "sness" (idk about what they called the Genesis, no one in that neighborhood had one).
Where I visited my cousins in Phoenix it was, again, "sness." You people claiming "no one called it sness" in the 90's just never heard it where you grew up. You're the oddities. Most everywhere it was "sness" because it was an easily pronounced single-syllable acronym.

You shouldn't allow the weirdo kids to define reality for you. As a certifiable 30-something, I can guarantee that most kids called it "Super Nintendo" with the rest calling it "S-N-E-S" (about a 90/10 split). I've literally never heard anyone call it "sness" until recent years.
