this is a bad way of measuring racism

What is a good way

I'm not sure that there is one.

racism can be thought of as a personal flaw. in that sense, saying "I'm not racist" is just denial and will not help. I support the idea of affirmative action (not so much the way it's been implemented, but that's another issue) but that doesn't mean I'm not racist. I was raised and socialized in a racist society, so I am still racist in a lot of ways that I don't even realize.

in this context, people should think about it as a process of personal growth - overcoming racism and personal biases - rather than a static "I am not racist" attitude. recognizing your own flaws is the first step to overcoming them.

(side note: there's a pretty good essay on Medium about how the Dark Side of The Force throughout Star Wars is an analogy for this: https://medium.com/@omically/im-not-racist-but-yes-i-am-prejudice-and-the-dark-side-of-the-force-646b319c6579)
