Sneak up behind them and alert them at the last minute so the attack comes from the front or something... check the laws of you area so you know how to go about it. some areas even self defense isn't good enough for some stupid reason. I lived in a state that legit had a law that stated you couldn't shoot an intruder with a gun of a larger caliber than what they had.
