Direct democracy > representative democracy. As it stands now, a vote is like a wish. You hope it results in what you want, but you're really not sure if it'll do any good because most of the time it doesn't seem to matter. Politicians just try to appease their friends and get re-elected, and there's really no accountability because they're (typically) equally shitty. With a direct democracy, there's more red tape by way of referendums and the like, but there's much less of an impact by big government and places have more local authority right down to the municipality. Obviously you would still want certain issues being mandated federally, but most things don't need to be handled that way and are anyway.

See the trouble with this is, we're dealing with massive idiots. You bring this up and idiots will say "But without the electoral college, states like California will decide the election!" and then you won't get anywhere with this person. There are two ways to go:

first, point out that no states would decide an election, because states wouldn't vote, individuals would. This will either get no response or continued claims that certain states will decide elections.

second, point out that right now, unless you live in a swing state your vote doesnt matter, as only people tin those states have any effect on things. This will result in some entirely absurd but unpredictable response.
