Direct democracy > representative democracy. As it stands now, a vote is like a wish. You hope it results in what you want, but you're really not sure if it'll do any good because most of the time it doesn't seem to matter. Politicians just try to appease their friends and get re-elected, and there's really no accountability because they're (typically) equally shitty. With a direct democracy, there's more red tape by way of referendums and the like, but there's much less of an impact by big government and places have more local authority right down to the municipality. Obviously you would still want certain issues being mandated federally, but most things don't need to be handled that way and are anyway.
