All the media attention Charlottesville received just created more alt-righters and didn't do anything to quell the problem. The best thing to do is to not give them any attention and remove their platforms on which to spread their propaganda. By protesting, you're just hurting your own cause because they are not going to go away. If you're willing to become a neo Nazi because of counter protesters you were already a bad person who identified with the group. Quit using bullshit excuses to justify a group that wants to exterminate entire cultures off the face of the Earth. Also, Nazis and other white supremacists demonstrating down American streets is no longer normal or cool so ignoring it normalizes their behavior and tells them what they're doing is acceptable.
