In Philly, servers make $2.85 an hour and rely on tips to make ends meet. Yes, it is bullshit that service industry workers in America are treated like 2nd class citizens and businesses aren't required to pay them minimum wage. With that said, if you don't want to tip your server then don't eat at full service restaurants. That's all.

Depends on the restaurant. Say the average tip is $8 and a server does three tables in one hour that's $24 tax free money in one hour. Say that server works only 24 hours in a week that's $576 dollars a week. Tax free. Or $29,952. Again tax free. All the servers I've known where openly dishonest about their taxes, and never got audited over it. I lived with one server who made over $50,000 in one year in tips. All tax free.

I'm not sure why you think it's tax free. You have to report at least the portion of your tips that equals to minimum wage. And if your getting paid tips from credit cards, those are all getting reported. Only at a cash only place, getting paid cash under the table could you get away without reporting any income and in that case good luck explaining how you have money to buy a house.
