For they preach, but do not practice.'" Matthew 23:1-4. The problem was they weren't Jewish enough, not that their beliefs were antiquated and ought be discarded. That verse is titled "A Warning Against Hypocrisy". So the Pharisees' hypocrisy is the main point of the verse, not that the people must follow the Law. Once again Jesus contradicts the Law himself many times and sums up the Law with the Golden Rule.
