If one doesn't get you working within a week, go sign up at another one. If you don't like the place they send you to, ask to go to another one. Temp agencies don't pay well, but you can use them to shop around for jobs, and most places that have used the agencies for a while don't have particularly high expectations for temps (because a lot of them are awful people) --- "I'm the straightest guy on this board.
