I've gone down that road before and found the company just picks up people and drops then once the contract runs out because why pay someone for a job when you can get the labour for free? Due to that I've become sceptical about going down that road again. Plus at my age I really should be in paid employment and moving out so voluntary work isn't going to cut it.

Depends where you are. I used to volunteer to spend time with seniors, and have volunteered to walk dogs and hang out with cats at animal shelters. Have also done volunteer events of different kinds--working in a casino, event planning, going to schools, etc. Met some nice people. Was stuff to do. I still volunteer my time for events but as a photographer in some cases.

I agree that much of it should be paid. But unfortunately many volunteer opportunities are for charities and/or non-profits which are doing their best to minimize funds used on staff and maximize the amount they can stretch donor money or limited revenue. They are also often vital to communities. Imagine if they DID pay for jobs like those--what a better place it would be. It would be a great way to spend government funds to help unemployment and engage more people in their communities.

Unfortunately if it's not generating revenue it's not generating jobs as even jobs that do generate revenue are shrinking up.
