I've never understood how atheists could be afraid of being dead unless they really believed in some form of afterlife.

For me it's simply because my brain can't comprehend the thought of never existing. Sure I never existed before I were born but since I were born I've developed the thought of fear. Maybe I'll never know that the day I die will be my last but closing my eyes and never waking up again is indeed a scary thought to me.

Being a atheist just means you don't believe in the existence of any gods it doesn't necessarily mean you believe in no afterlife. Although I personally don't believe in a afterlife I actually want a afterlife to be real because at least then I can carry on "living". That would be nothing more than burring my head in the sand from reality though if I believed that.

but I don't keep myself up at night pondering about a state of non-existence.

I wonder if those who don't think about it have any form of anxiety or depression. I mean I never used to give it much though but because my anxiety makes me believe I'm going to die from the many aches and pains I get(mostly tense mussels in my head and chest) it must have triggered me to think about these thoughts much deeper. Although it's not death anxiety I have it's on the verge of it. That's the only explanation I have to these thoughts as I'm only 30 and don't plan on being dead anytime soon.
