Chapter 2
Pages 21-33

”…we’re going to be thrown into an arena to fight to the death. Exactly how am I supposed to work in a thank-you in there? Somehow it just won’t seem sincere if I’m trying to slit his throat.”

Summary:
Ah so, the lovely Katniss steps forward in tribute in lieu of her little sister. I can’t say I didn’t see this coming, I’m pretty sure I saw it in one of the trailers for the movie – but it’s all good. We also get to see her struggle through the loss of her father and the uselessness of her mother, basically anointing herself head of the family at age 11. Katniss is like, “listen, we’re gonna live off these mint leaves, so don’t worry about it mom. Mint leaves and water are totally an appropriate meal for two growing girls. Yeah, yeah, you just sit there. It’s cool.”
Oh wait. It’s not cool because now little Katniss is sitting out in the rain picking through the trash wishing she could just rage quit her life. But wait! St. Peeta is there to throw her burnt bread! It’s a rainy day miracle! Just in time too, because the next day Katniss gets a great idea about how to keep her family alive. All she needed was a little bread and the stalking leer of a blond baker boy. Hooray!
While all this flashbacking is very insightful and lots of fun, we have to get back to the games. Katniss is like, “**** crying on national television. That’s not gonna happen. No. Way.” Unfortunately for her, her luck keeps getting worse, as who else but St. Peeta is called as the male tribute. As the national anthem plays, Katniss silently hopes her luck will improve – to which I say, don’t hold your breath girl!

Thoughts:
Katniss’ mom just seriously makes me so mad. I hate how weak she was in the face of losing her husband. Yeah it’s a tragedy, but you’ve still got two little girls to take care of you pile of crap. You can’t afford to just sit and look forlornly out the window for months on end. Good thing Katniss is like, “*****, I got this – gtfo.” Anyway, I somehow doubt the mom is an integral part of the story. I think she’s more just a device to show us how Katniss became so strong and independent.
I don’t particularly like where this whole thing is going with Peeta. I’m foreseeing love interest, and that’s not cool. We’ll see where it goes though. One question I always think to myself as I’m reading a battle royale is “Would I try and team up, or would I just stay on my own from the get go?” I think each choice has its advantages and disadvantages. It’ll be interesting to see what Katniss does.
One thing I don’t exactly get is the level of technology available to the general populace. The Hunger Games are a televised event, yet it doesn’t seem like the citizens really have access to any technology. Katniss is hunting with a bow and arrow, there doesn’t seem to be modern medicine, etc. Perhaps it’ll become clearer later. Not that it’s a big deal, it’s just not very apparent.
