Heck, a phlebotomist that's gentle with the poking is more likely to cause extra damage and discomfort than one who just jabs it in there smoothly and quickly. The point is that people don't associate getting poked or stuck by a needle as being "stabbed", much less conflate getting blood drawn as a violent act.
