Once they switch actors for Max Rockatansky, they decided that the film wasn't going to fit the established continuity, but rather that the series would be like unrelated tales of a mysterious rogue who used to be a police officer. I am pretty sure it is still all one timeline. Debate rages, but most fan interpretations take the "Many Tales" approach.
