Metropolis I think is in New York State. ironically in that universe it's more famous and bigger than NYC, in it's own state. and Gotham is across the water in New Jersey. I saw a comic panel once that showed a Gotham drivers liscence and it said "Gotham City, New Jersey" Metropolis and Gotham are both based on NYC.
